Healing family estrangements

From the October 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is there someone in your family that you're not speaking to? Perhaps you long to heal the estrangement, but you just really don't know how or where to begin.

Centuries ago the Master, Christ Jesus, presented the way for healing any discordant human relationship. He said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." John 13:34. And in the Sermon on the Mount, he counseled, "If thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift." Matt. 5:23, 24.

When we're the family member suffering from anger, wounded pride, resentment, grief, fear—perhaps even verbal and physical abuse—we may wonder how we can possibly obey Christ Jesus' teachings to love another as he loved and be reconciled to them.
