Arise! Come forth

From the April 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Long ago, men tried to bury the Christ
in darkened cave,
and rolled a heavy stone across,
to seal the grave.
Fear, hatred, jealousy, lack of understanding,
condemned and crucified;
yet the living Christ today
bears witness to the Truth, which never died.

Do we today, attempt to bury Christ?
Push true and loving thought
into the dark cavern of our mind?
Believe that we are helpless, hopeless, caught . ..
in frustration's net—
that our efforts are for naught?
Do we roll across a hard and selfish stone
and pretend that we don't hear
the call of the living Christ, which says,
"Look up, not down. Have love, not fear"?

Yet, in obedience, as thought expands
and opens to true day,
the light of ever-present Love
will roll the stone away.

We then will find
ourselves no longer bound
in graveclothes of despair
but at one with the risen Lord.
For, in truth, the "I" was never there.
