My family came into Christian Science when we children were very young, so my sisters and I had the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School. There we were taught how to study carefully the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. This lesson is read in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, every Sunday. We also learned how to pray, which we undertook daily. The protection experienced by my family in France during the Second World War was truly wonderful.
We had had a peaceful life until the war started. Then the churches were closed, and our family was separated for many years. My mother and younger sister were in Normandy, living by the seaside. And my father, my other sister, and I were in Paris for our work and studies. On D-day when we three learned that Allied troops had landed in Normandy, we realized that our home there would be affected by the battle. Naturally we were very much concerned for the safety of my mother and sister, but we did not know what to do. The subject of the Bible Lesson for that week was "God the Preserver of Man." And the Golden Text in the lesson was from Jeremiah (30:11): "I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee."
The three of us decided that each one would go to a different room and pray. After we had done this for a while, we found that we all felt the same—that we should go and join the others in Normandy. But how could we get there? We had no car, and there was no gasoline available for civilians, who had to rely on bicycles. Yet we had only one bicycle for the three of us.
