For nearly fifteen years I was the general manager and director of a large organization. To the satisfaction of shareholders, principals, and customers, sales and profits grew along with a strong service organization. Then a change of board chairman brought about a change in direction that I felt was detrimental to the shareholders. Actions were taken and commitments made without my knowledge, although I was a director. As this activity became apparent, I looked deeper into my study of Christian Science for spiritually scientific help.
I found that help in Proverbs (22:29): "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men." Being diligent to me included expressing integrity and dedication—applying Christian values to business. I continued to perform my work to the best of my ability, and I recognized God's complete care of His children.
As business pressures increased I felt frustrated, and I began to question if what I was doing was indeed correct and in the best interests of the shareholders. Then I read this verse in Isaiah (30:21): "Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." I knew that as I prayed with a sincere desire to be divinely guided, I would have the inspiration and understanding to make correct decisions.
