Testimonies of Healing

From the April 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How often has it been said, "What is there to be grateful for?"—when one is challenged with bleak future prospects? In my experience, however, the power of gratitude has brought healing, serenity, and confidence many times through recognition of the reality of God's powerful control.

The power of gratitude played an important part in two healings that seemed extraordinary to those who witnessed them. This gratitude to God was combined with prayerful study of the Holy Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and the practical application of the spiritual truths contained in these books.

One morning while I was at work a very painful condition developed in my ankle and foot. It felt as though the ankle had been badly sprained, but this was not the case. By noon it was extremely difficult to walk, and by mid-afternoon the pain was causing faintness and a feeling of nausea. Since my work required a certain amount of walking, my supervisor insisted that I go to the company medical department. The doctor, upon examination of the foot and ankle, requested that I go to the hospital for further examination; he believed that some sort of blood condition was causing the difficulty. I declined, and after he bound the foot and ankle to help me walk I returned to my office and called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer.
