Living the truth

From the April 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Bible tells us that when Christ Jesus was accused by the Jews and chief priests and brought before Pilate for questioning, he said, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." And it continues, "Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?"John 18:37, 38.

Just what did Jesus mean by truth? What did he "bear witness" to in his short and glorious career? He proved that divine Truth, God, liberates when understood. He uplifted morals by interpreting the Commandments in a spiritual light. When a sinner gave evidence of reformation, he forgave him. He healed the sick and dying in direct opposition to general expectation. And he himself rose from the grave.

Regarding Pilate's query, Mrs. Eddy comments in Science and Health: "The women at the cross could have answered Pilate's question. They knew what had inspired their devotion, winged their faith, opened the eyes of their understanding, healed the sick, cast out evil, and caused the disciples to say to their Master: 'Even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.'"Science and Health, p. 49.
