My parents and grandparents are Christian Scientists, and I was a regular pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School (I am grateful for the loving guidance of dedicated teachers). My deepest gratitude embraces my family for their steadfast reliance on divine Truth for protection and healing. They followed this wise counsel in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 237): "To prevent the experience of error and its sufferings, keep out of the minds of your children either sinful or diseased thoughts."
As a result of my family's consistent and prayerful acknowledgment of God's allness, so-called childhood diseases were virtually unknown in our family. When the symptoms of a difficulty did appear, my parents and I prayed together to overcome the trouble. Expectancy of good was ever apparent in our household!
When I was twelve years old I spent two weeks at my grandparents' home during my summer vacation from school. The last day of my stay I was playing a game when I slipped at the top of some concrete stairs and fell headlong down the full flight. I landed with all my weight on one hand and arm. The result was a fracture, with the bone protruding through my hand.
