My mother became interested in Christian Science when her sister was healed of double pneumonia through Christian Science after her doctors had given up hope for her recovery. As a result of witnessing this remarkable demonstration of the power of Truth, my mother started studying Science. I began attending a Christian Science Sunday School at the age of three.
I am sincerely grateful for the many healings I have had over the years through Christian Science and for the many instances of God's divine guidance and care. I am also grateful for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and for the opportunity to participate in the many activities of branch churches.
In 1940 I received the endorsement of The Christian Science Board of Directors to serve as a Christian Science chaplain in the armed services. I then applied to the adjutant general of the United States Army in Washington, D.C., for a commission in the chaplaincy. I was told that because I was not an ordained minister and had not graduated from a theological seminary, I would have to take a special examination. (At that time there was no chaplains' school or provision for Christian Scientists to obtain a commission as a chaplain except by special appointment.)
