I had been a member of a church of another denomination all my life and had always relied on medical care. After receiving treatment from eight doctors over a period of six and a half years without success, I discontinued the medical attention. I felt somewhat like the woman in the Bible who "had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered" (Mark).
Yearning for a deeper spirituality in my life, I began reading books written by leading ministers. Around that time I was speaking to a Christian Scientist of my troubles, and he asked me if I would like to try Christian Science. I asked him to tell me about it. He talked for a few minutes, mentioning the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and the fact that it has healed people. Then he told me where I could get a copy.
After pondering what he said, I decided to read the book, even though I didn't believe that I could be healed through reading it. I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed a copy However, it seemed that I couldn't find time to read the book, and I went back a second and third time to borrow it. As I talked with the librarian one day, I commented that she must value this book very much. She said that if there were only one copy in the whole world and someone offered her a choice between the book and a million dollars, she would choose the book. This impressed me greatly.
