Bible Notes

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for August 1989

From the July 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible j Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by The Christian Science Journal as indications of the possibilities for individual research. © 1989 The Christian Science Publishing Society. All rights reserved.

They that are after the flesh (Rom. 8:5)

The Interpreter's Bible (IB) notes that "the flesh" here refers to the "natural" man in contrast to those who have received the Spirit. For the apostle "the flesh" is not inherently sinful; it is, however, the matrix out of which arise desires and lusts that tempt to sin, and which cannot be conquered without a relationship with Christ (see Rom. 7:18 — 8:4). Nathan (II Sam. 12:1)
