An understanding of Christian Science brings with it an influx of Love that cannot be quenched. This Love is divine, its influence is divine, its effect is divine. Healing and salvation from sin are its inevitable result. Those who have gained some understanding of Christian Science feel a responsibility to defend this spiritual attainment so that they may continue to demonstrate Christian Science in daily life by healing the sick and the sinning. Heeding this point is essential, for as the book of James states so precisely, "Faith without works is dead." James 2:26. As the Discoverer of Christian Science and its first teacher, Mary Baker Eddy, explains in the Preface of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural. They are the sign of Immanuel, or 'God with us,'—a divine influence ever present in human consciousness and repeating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime, To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense], And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised." Science and Health, p, xi.
There is nothing like the change that comes over life when one recognizes "Immanuel," that "divine influence ever present in human consciousness." Maintaining and preserving this spiritual at-one-ment with God, however, requires alertness. Christian Science makes it possible to come to some attainment of what Paul refers to as that Mind which was in Christ Jesus. See Phil. 2:5. For this Mind to be consistently manifested through spiritualization of thought, healing, and regeneration requires that Christian Scientists follow an important instruction titled "Alertness to Duty" See Man., Art. VIII, Sect. 6. in the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
Deeply imbued with a love for spiritual good, the student of Christian Science can learn to detect that which is not Christly. Fidelity to God means fidelity to the teachings and practice of His Son, Christ Jesus; for through his example we know the Father. One's unfaltering loyalty to God, one's abiding consciousness of good, is utter destruction to error and evil of every hue. The ultimate proof of this is found in the resurrection and ascension of Christ Jesus.
