Chastity: cherishing our true nature

From the August 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Chastity. Not a word you hear very often. It doesn't seem to be a popular concept. And yet it's absolutely indispensable to spiritual growth.

What do you think of when you hear the word? Do you think of freshness and freedom? Of a deep security rooted in something more permanent than circumstance? If not, maybe a better understanding of chastity is needed. "Chastity is the cement of civilization and progress," Science and Health, p. 57. writes Mrs. Eddy in her book Science and Health. Progress is certainly not old-fashioned!

We want interesting and colorful lives, and yet we also want unshakable inner stability, health, joy, wisdom, self-respect, abundant good, and a feeling of purpose. Chastity helps us find our way to these elements by opening to us a wider view of spiritual life, where true good resides. How?
