The blessings of overcoming sin

From the August 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes sin leads us into anguish, and we feel degrading guilt and unworthiness. Other times sin is subtly hidden in thought, and we may not even recognize it. Or we may not consider a sin serious enough to give it up.

Actually, sin is looking for good outside
of God, Spirit. It is seeking good in or trusting
in matter, material circumstances, or a material
mind. For example, pride is thinking that our
individual worth is derived from material talents,
position, or possessions.

As we face up to sin and overcome it, we feel closer to God, freer from the limitations inherent in matter, more conscious of our own worth and dignity as the beloved children of God. But it can involve a heart-wrenching struggle.
