There's much in a college experience that broadens our capabilities, expands our view of ourselves and the world. But there's also much in the academic world that would seek to define us—to establish the limits of what we can accomplish, intellectually and physically. ...
Part of what Mary Baker Eddy discovered when she discovered Christian Science is that man is defined by God alone. And this fact changes everything. In academic experience, it uncovers deeper possibilities for learning and giving, for loving and growing. It says that you don't have to feel alone or devastated by academic pressure or enticed by worldly distractions because here and now God enables you to live what is real, which is the goodness and love and wisdom that Spirit forever expresses in its children.
As we learn to live on this basis, we naturally start seeing the profound spiritual unity or brotherhood that necessarily resides at the heart of all life as God gives it. It has to do with the fact that, in truth, we all have the same Father-Mother, who holds us together in His love. So we find a deeper bond with friends and neighbors, and with peers and colleagues.
