We felt Journal readers might enjoy these thoughts...

From the May 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We felt Journal readers might enjoy these thoughts shared in a letter from a contributor—The Editors.

Dear Friends:

On page 271 of Miscellaneous Writings Mrs. Eddy recommends that her followers support the Journal. She writes: "They should take our magazine, work for it, write for it, and read it." However she does not say to expect that what you write will necessarily be published—just write for it.

Although I have metaphysically and financially supported our periodicals, and read them over the years, it was only on rare occasions that I submitted articles. Consequently I have now decided to carry out our Leader's request in all she asks....

Even if the composition of an article falls short of what is suitable for the Field, it must contain in its structure at least one idea to stir consciousness, particularly if the writer sincerely tried to put words together with the intent to rouse thought.

It is possible that just one statement in a submitted article will awaken the thinking of at least one person who carefully scrutinizes it, take seed, and bear fruitage of some kind....

I can recall having articles rejected, but from my research in putting together what was submitted, I got perhaps one statement that sparked my own thought. Then perhaps taken that one idea and included it in a Wednesday evening testimony and later have someone say the idea presented was helpful to him. So even if the idea did not go out into consciousness in written form, it was broadcast verbally and fulfilled a purpose. And who can say how far it might spread out even from the one that was benefited by it.

So rejections will never disturb me or disappoint me. And I am most appreciative of the difficult task the Editors have to make sure that what goes out in the periodicals is not...incorrect from a Christian Science standpoint....

You can expect an occasional manuscript from me in the future.

Sincerely yours,
