The relevance of spiritual healing

From the February 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In today's world of fast-changing medical technology, spiritual healing could seem anachronistic, possibly even irrelevant. While Christ Jesus' healing works were wonderful for his times, some might say, modern society doesn't really need a spiritual solution to physical difficulties.

If healing involved simply fixing the human body—somewhat like the way a mechanic fixes cars—then perhaps some as-yet-undeveloped technology would indeed hold all the answers. But those who are healers—of whatever type— generally recognize that healing involves more than this. And someone who has been healed through prayer would emphatically agree.

I gained some insight regarding this many years ago when I severely injured my knee. I wasn't a Christian Scientist at the time. For a variety of reasons, I had difficulty finding a doctor, and so, given my situation, I was doing a lot of praying. At first I prayed that God would help me find a doctor. Then I prayed that God would contribute to the healing of my knee. Finally I began to pray that things would all work out, no matter what.
