BIBLE NOTES

RELATED TO THE LESSON-SERMONS FOR JULY 1991

From the June 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by The Christian Science Journal as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? (Jer. 23:23) This is a rebuke to the deceitful prophets who take God lightly. God is not a local deity from whom one can escape. Like those that follow, this question is intended to be rhetorical. The point isn't that God is distant or detached from His people but that He is "no small local deity," as John Bright puts it. God's nature is boundless, infinite. He sees all.
