Legitimate demands

From the June 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Truth, Life, and Love are the only legitimate and eternal demands on man, and they are spiritual lawgivers, enforcing obedience through divine statutes" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy).

"I can't do it"—everything within me cried.
The other person—envy, greed, and politics—
Had hedged me in
No matter how I prayed and tried
To rise above it.
"What caused this?"
I asked in plain frustration,
Saying to myself so patly—
"There is no cause in matter."
And then the answer came:
Truth did it.
Truth did it! How could that be?
But suddenly
I heard within that clear command:
Know the Truth!
Feel the presence of God—
The only one I am.
Matter has no self to fail, suffer lack, or sin.
God's laws are forcing me
To know Truth's allness—here, within.

"I am sick"—the wretched feeling
So confused me that I left my watch
And through that open door
The flood of universal fear
Brought forth a panic.
The symptoms: pictures long forgotten
Of a neighbor, family member, beloved friend—
A funeral dirge of grim suggestions
Which, it seemed, would never end.
What did this to me?
I asked in fearful desperation.
The answer came: life did it.
Life did it? How could that be?
And suddenly
I knew
The real resuscitating law of Life
Demanded recognition,
And I felt the Holy Ghost within my
consciousness
Had set me free
To live my life in Christ.
