The Science of Christian care

From the June 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science nursing is a Christlike ministry of unselfed love. Nursing in its broader sense isn't limited to those who have had nurses' training only; the nursing qualities are for all to practice. One motive for nursing is to glorify God through Christian caring, and in this way to promote healing for our family, friends, and fellow church members. The Christ empowers us to love each other, to nurture each other. It inspires us and enables us to overcome feelings of indifference or of being too busy to comfort and minister. Jesus set the model for Christly care when he said, "The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." Matt. 20:28.

We need not be afraid to minister to each other. Our innate Christly qualities of patience, grace, unselfed love, and confidence in God will often provide the proper care. Spiritual sense, our demonstrated Christliness, will tell us what to do for those we comfort. And it will give us the wisdom to call upon a Christian Science nurse when needed. If one isn't available, God will guide us to do what is right in each situation for the benefit of the patient and our Cause.

Christian Science nursing helps correct public misconceptions that Christian Scientists ignore or neglect fellow members in need. Indeed, it ensures that we care for our family, friends, and fellow church members. And this is our nursing practice.
