I'm grateful for a childhood in a Christian Scientist family. One grandmother very early taught me familiar Bible verses that have stayed with me, while another read the Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly with me every morning before I went to school.
In the summer before I was a high-school senior, I was in a car that overturned several times. Because of the daily study with my grandmother, and the resulting awareness of God's care, I turned instantly to God as the car was rolling over. I climbed out of that car with hardly a scratch.
I was once healed instantaneously of an abscessed tooth. The pain was so bad that I could hardly think, but I determined that I would repeat these words from the description of man in Science and Health: "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique." I knew that just repeating the words would not bring healing, but that turning to God and understanding the truth would. And the healing came.
