One healing that has meant much to me occurred while I was on an outing to the city with a group of Sunday School students. I had misjudged the drop of a curbing and badly sprained an ankle. I did not fall, or even mention this to the group, and no one was aware of the accident. I held to the words of "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health, but it wasn't until we arrived home, and my daughters were put to bed that evening, that it became evident I needed more quiet prayer. I was not able to step on the greatly swollen foot without severe pain, and had to crawl upstairs and into bed.
After a few hours of prayer and study I was not much better, but I thought it best to wait until morning to call a Christian Science practitioner for help.
When even sleep seemed impossible, I decided to pray in support of a Christian Science lecture my church was about to give for our community. Opening the Bible at random, I came upon these words from Romans: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God" (13:1). Then I declared that the various methods people have sought for help—such as astrology, mysticism, hypnotism, and medicine—are of mortal invention, and are not in accordance with God's laws. I realized that He and He alone governs all. I knew that no one was excluded from God's care, or could fail to feel His wisdom and love. Thinking and praying with this Bible verse, I finally fell asleep.
