Putting love of Truth ahead of everything else

From the February 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To study Christian Science is to follow the star of Bethlehem, to desire to understand the Truth and Love demonstrated by Christ Jesus. Christian Science heals, and those whose lives have been transformed by it treasure its healing power. Yet any time this Science is studied just for its cures, for the "loaves and fishes," we are actually traducing Christ's life and teaching. With every occasion for healing we can ask ourselves if we seek this healing for its own sake or if we love Truth above all.

The Master said, "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." Matt. 10:39. Here is the crux of the issue we all face. If our life purpose is to follow Christ, Truth, we have to give up our worship of earthly gains. Paradoxically, when we obediently do so, we are enabled to feel the divine influx that empowers us to express and experience wholeness here and now.

A lifetime of complete consecration may seem beyond one's reach. But when we rise in moments of demand to care more for Truth than for anything else, even needed healing, we not only find healing but we experience a sense of God's presence profound enough to make us want to bring all our moments into this heaven. Jesus had compassion in regard to our human needs and said: "Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:32, 33.
