A couple of years ago, citizens in the United States were inundated with statistics, polls, and propaganda relating to national health care. Although no legislation was enacted at that time, surely it is right that we continue to consider the issue of health care seriously. And it is always the right time to establish a clear sense of what health really is, and to learn how to attain and maintain it. One thing we know for sure —health can't be bought, and it can't be legislated.
Mary Baker Eddy writes in her book Rudimental Divine Science, "Health is the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease; or, rather, the absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else." Rud., p. 11. She also says, "... health, alias harmony, is the normal manifestation of man in Science." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 41.
The second statement might raise an eyebrow unless one is cognizant that divine Science is what is being referred to. In divine Science, in the spiritual reality of being, man has never been less than whole and perfect, and this can be proved. That which is scientific is provable; it rests on invariable laws and is available everywhere, to everyone. After Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science, she deeply pondered the Bible, searching for an understanding of what she realized must be the absolute spiritual rules that had enabled Jesus to succeed in healing discordant conditions of every sort. She found in the Scriptures a God who is infinitely loving, the only Mind. This Mind is totally good, all-harmonious, the only creator, eternal Life, unchanging Truth.
