Further thoughts on Sunday School teaching

From the May 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On this page young people are encouraged to "speak out about issues of concern to them as they pursue the study of Christian Science." Australian Serena Hutchinson-Brooks did this in the January issue of the Journal, and the following e-mail from Melanie Ann Wahlberg, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, is one of many responses to Serena's interview we have received in recent weeks.

Serena's Comments in "We've got to listen more" were rich and thought-provoking. I loved reading them, and felt that she brought up many good points, especially the imperative of finding ways to encourage youth to explore Christianity and Christian Science as they work through the challenges of their times.

One section in particular stood out to me. Serena said, "Couldn't more be done to brief Sunday School teachers and share ideas with them on ways of making classes more lively? I often wish young people could be encouraged more to open up and say something like: 'I've done this thing. I'm dealing with it. Help me!' Or, 'I've done it and I've come through it, and here's how I dealt with it.'"
