God preserves life

From the April 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My introduction to Christian Science came with marriage to one raised in this way of life, who practiced it faithfully. My interest in religion had always been minimal. Over time, observing the many quick healing my wife experienced led me to take an active interest in this practical Science. Subsequently, I had many healings through my own prayer, and some with the help of a Christian Science practitioner.

Despite my positive experiences, I wondered if I would feel sure of the efficacy of Christian Science if a severe emergency ever arose. I was employed as an engineer on a project that entailed driving a series of tunnels in soft ground, at elevations below sea level. Water intrusion was a constant concern, as a washout would cause immense damage to the properties above the tunnels and to the project itself.

As soon as each tunnel lining was completed, we would remove the ventilating and pumping equipment to an active heading, typically several miles away. Each afternoon I would drive to the completed tunnels to be sure that no washouts had occurred.
