Testimonies of Healing

Deep depression lifted

From the June 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For A Time, I was experiencing feelings of deep depression. I turned to the dictionary and looked up the word depression. I found one definition to be, "low spirits .... sadness." I immediately began to realize that these certainly were not Christly qualities and could not be a part of God's creation. They were without God, so were without a source or a power.

To find out more about happiness, the opposite of sadness, I decided to study the Beatitudes (see Matt. 5:3-12) and to strive to get a clearer understanding of each one. I enjoyed reading and pondering them. I knew that healing would have to result from my efforts to understand and live in accord with them. Mary Baker Eddy's writings shed more light on the subject. For instance, Science and Health states: "Resisting evil, you overcome it and prove its nothingness. Not human platitudes, but divine beatitudes, reflect the spiritual light and might which heal the sick" (p. 446).

Light displaced darkness, and I felt joyful.
