Visiting the sick is on Jesus' list

Compassion makes a difference.

From the September 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Come, ye blessed of my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you ...
I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat:
I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
naked, and ye clothed me:
I was sick, and ye visited me ...

Matthew 25:34–36

I've often thought of what Jesus said about visiting the sick—that it was a part of compassionate ministry. On several occasions, he told his followers to heal the sick. So I've wondered why he said "visited" in this instance instead of "healed." While he himself healed people quickly and completely—at the first encounter or even from a distance—I've wondered if he could have been alluding to the needs of someone whose healing comes more slowly.
