I knew I had found what I had always been looking for when a neighbor shared copies of the Christian Science Sentinel with me. Soon I was reading Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, along with the Bible.
I loved what I was learning about God and my relationship to Him. But I wasn't sure I could trust these teachings completely in dealing with physical difficulties, especially where my children were concerned. I did realize, though, that my reliance on God couldn't come about through a blind acceptance of theological doctrine. It had to come from an intelligent understanding of God. As I read the ideas expressed in these books, and thought deeply about them, I began to understand that there is a Science of Christianity that anyone can apply, in any situation. Healings began to take place naturally, as a result of a growing understanding of my own and my children's relationship to God. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.
Every year since she was a toddler, my daughter had experienced a severe allergic reaction to poison ivy. We'd consulted a pediatrician about this, but when he told us that the side effects of the treatment could be more severe than the symptoms themselves, we decided not to go that route.
