For those who manage volunteers

From the July 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Supervising a corps of volunteers poses its own unique challenges—among them, figuring out how to recruit willing participants, how to ensure that they have a positive experience, and how to keep them enthusiastic about coming back for more.

Fortunately, the resources available to those who manage unpaid workers continue to expand.

One such resource is the website www.energizeinc.com which offers a variety of tools to assist service organizations, including a link for faith-based groups (www.energizeinc.com/art/subj/faith.html).

People who manage volunteers might also find the following books helpful:

Volunteers: How to Get Them, How to Keep Them, by Helen Little (Panacea Press).

When Everyone's a Volunteer; The Effective Functioning of All-Volunteer Groups, by Ivan H. Scheier (Energize Books).

The (Help!) I-Don't-Have-Enough-Time Guide to Volunteer Management, by Katherine Noyes Campbell and Susan J. Ellis (Energize Books).
