Amy Meyers might be what most people think of as the typical volunteer. A stay-at-home mother of two, Meyers helps out in her children's classrooms, is active in the local Parent-Teacher Organization, pitches in at the public library and at church, and serves on the board of her small New Hampshire town's Village Improvement Society—where she organizes a public reading of the Declaration of Independence every Fourth of July.
Meyers comes from a tradition of community service. She grew up watching both her mother and grandmother volunteer. But it wasn't until she finished school that she got involved.
"I moved to Boston after I graduated from college," Meyers explains. "And my job was in politics. Through my work, I knew a lot of men. But I didn't know any other young women. My mother said, 'Join the Junior League! Join the Junior League!' So I did."
