The family that volunteers together

From the July 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Robyn Arthur wasn't trying to prove a point when she signed up for volunteer work with her middle-school-aged daughter, Lindsay. She mostly just wanted them to spend quality time together. Little did she know that participating in community service with a family member is the single biggest indicator of whether a person will continue to volunteer in the future. And that approach certainly seems to have worked with Lindsay.

Now a sophomore at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Lindsay remains active in community service in a number of ways—including a program that provides meals for the homeless and as a one-woman Christian Science organization on her campus.

Did the volunteer work she did with her mom have an impact on Lindsay? Absolutely, both mother and daughter say.
