A service-driven life

From the July 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To be honest, I didn't consider myself service-driven until recently. I was contemplating different career options for when I finish law school next year, and someone suggested that I clerk for a judge. That prospect didn't appeal to me, which I found kind of surprising. Then I got to thinking about it, and I realized that I would really miss helping people.

I've helped out at church for as long as I can remember. When I was small, my dad and granddad were plumbers, and they would often take care of minor repairs to the plumbing or the heating and cooling system at our branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I would go with them and help out. Or I'd pull weeds in the yard—that kind of thing.

Then, when I was 12, I joined that church. My motive was primarily love. Love for the members of the church, and a desire to offer an extra pair of hands when I can. Love for Christian Science and what it's meant to me. Also love for humanity, because I think that branch churches are an integral part of making Christian Science available to the public. And I want to do what I can to support that.
