When my department at work was phased out several years ago, I knew I needed to find a way to fill my time. At that point, I didn't want to get another full-time job. But I wanted to find ways to be constructively busy.
I asked myself, "What is it that I can do?" The response was a simple one, "Well, I know how to read and I know how to walk." So I started a walking and fitness regimen, and recently took part in a 20-mile Walk for Hunger, sponsored by a local charity, Project Bread.
As for reading, I remembered that an outplacement counselor had suggested I look into making recordings for the visually impaired. I signed on with Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, a national organization that does that kind of work and have been serving as a general reader for them for the past four years.
