'My Father's business'

From the June 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Work is the reflection of income already received.” This was the thought that came to me just after I had moved to Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, the seat of the Federal Government. With my experience and varied background in science, commerce, and administration, I was confident of finding suitable employment in the public service sector. I applied for many different positions commensurate with my qualifications, but without success—I didn’t secure even one interview.

Despite this setback, I didn’t feel despondent. I felt very strongly that the thought had been an angel message from God, divine Love, gently prompting me to gain a more spiritual perspective on employment. The majority-held belief is that income is the result of work, and that as soon as work ceases, income also stops. But from a spiritual viewpoint, the reverse is true. Income is the constant, uninterrupted flow of right ideas from God. It is the result of the activity of the Christ, of divine Truth’s revelation of itself, which is perpetual, like the light from the sun.

I resolved that I would no longer apply for positions in the government but would spend my time praying specifically about problems—local, national, and international.
