In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy explains, “It is only by acknowledging the supremacy of Spirit, which annuls the claims of matter, that mortals can lay off mortality and find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes man forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from his creator” (p. 491).
We may ask ourselves, What are the “claims of matter” that Spirit, God, annuls, revealing our true nature as children of God? They can be none other than whatever would suggest that there is life and intelligence in matter, such as disease, lack, or dissatisfaction—in short, all forms of limitation.
When we are confronted with a problem or a delicate situation, a sincere and profound acknowledgment that God, Spirit, governs the whole universe supremely, perfectly, and harmoniously frees us from limitation, bringing to light appropriate solutions. But what are the characteristics of these solutions—are they limited, temporary, unreliable? Not at all!
