According to the Bible, health comes from God. In Psalms 42:11 we read, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, we read, “Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; . . .” (p. 120). Therefore, health is spiritual, not material. It is the radiant reality of eternal Life itself.
Early one Sunday morning I awakened about 2:00 a.m. suddenly feeling ill. The first thought that came to me was, “How am I going to read tomorrow morning at the church service? It’s too late to get a substitute.” But then the comforting thought came that God is omnipresent. “That means heaven is omnipresent,” I realized. “That’s where I live and move and have my being, and that means health, harmony—heaven itself—is at hand.”
With that I was immediately healed. But I continued to pray. I knew health was ever present and powerful, and it could never go away. I thought about a verse in that week’s Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly: “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). At that moment I understood that this statement wasn’t a rebuke. Instead Jesus was saying, “Rejoice! Turn your thought from material beliefs because heaven, including infinite health, is at hand.” And it was! I was able to read that Sunday at church with great joy and dominion.
