“Eternal Truth is changing the universe” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 255). This statement from the Christian Science textbook caught my attention, and in this line of thought, Mrs. Eddy refers a number of times to Truth and its leavening action in human consciousness.
Leaven by definition is an active agent or pervasive influence that alters or transforms something for the better. One point that became clear to me as I contemplated this was that I needed to accept the truth God is unfolding, in order to witness its healing authority in our lives. To see truth as the fruit of mere intellectual contemplation is to relegate it to a concept of the human mind, without any authority or effect. On the other hand, to recognize that all truth comes from God and has all the might and power of infinite divine Love supporting it, is to assimilate it in human consciousness and therefore experience it in a healing way.
I thought, “ ‘Eternal Truth is changing the universe’ may be paraphrased, ‘Ever-active Truth is leavening human consciousness.’ ” This set my heart on a quest to discover and to understand how the leavening action of Truth is continuously taking place universally. Christ Jesus spoke of this leaven in a parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened” (Matthew 13:33).
