When I was in my twenties, a longtime church member asked when I was going to take Christian Science Primary class instruction. I replied that I hadn’t thought of it. She said she could really guarantee that I would love it and benefit hugely from it.
And so I did. The 12 days of class instruction were the most wonderfully inspiring I could ever have imagined. My teacher said she would always be available to assist us but that we now had the tools in the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, to turn to God as our family’s Physician. I took that as gospel.
I have been privileged to witness the healing efficacy of God, divine Truth, many, many times over the years. My husband used to attend a mainstream church, but after seeing so many healings in the family, he said he could not argue with proof and embraced the study of Christian Science wholeheartedly.
We were taught in class to pray about each challenging situation immediately, so most were healed overnight or very quickly. One afternoon when my daughter was playing outside, I heard her cry out. It looked as though her arm was broken, since it was at a very strange angle. I helped her get into a more comfortable position on the couch and immediately began to pray, refusing to be afraid. We put on a recording of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, which in the past had often helped us to calm our fears. I prayed to know that as a spiritual idea, my daughter was always held in God’s loving arms, and He would never let her go. The pain subsided quickly.
Science and Health explains, “If the case is that of a young child or an infant, it needs to be met mainly through the parent’s thought. . .” (p. 412). I went earnestly to God, and He revealed what I most needed to pray about. Someone dear to me had passed on very suddenly, and I was devastated. When I realized that I was in no way dependent on a mortal person for my joy and happiness, but only on God, I felt at peace. I also realized that whatever sad thoughts I might have been entertaining could have no impact on my daughter’s well-being, as God, divine Mind, is the only source of ideas, which could only comfort and support both me and her.
My daughter had absolutely no pain the next morning and felt she could wear her normal school jersey without the need for a sling. I continued to pray to understand that God enfolds His precious children always and that they can never succumb to thoughts of accident or injury. They are forever safe because, as Deuteronomy 33:27 states, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Both my daughter and I felt comfortable treating the arm through prayer in Christian Science. Neither she nor I manipulated the arm, but we continued to “look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality,” as Mrs. Eddy instructs in Science and Health on page 261. The arm straightened of its own accord, and after just a week there was no sign of a break. We all rejoiced, and my daughter has used that arm perfectly ever since, playing most sports, including tennis and netball.
Christian Science certainly is the “pearl of great price.” It teaches one how to think accurately about God and man at all times, and having it in our home as we raised four children has been the biggest blessing of my life.

I am the daughter mentioned in the testimony. The experience happened just as my mum has related it. I cannot even remember which arm was supposed to have been broken, as there is no scar at all. I love Christian Science and use it every day.
