“Trials are proofs of God’s care.” That statement by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures on page 66 was often a source of confusion for me. I had been taught in Sunday School that my Mother-Father God is infinite Love, and over the years had experienced some wonderful healings as a result of understanding this tender, loving relation. But I remember thinking: “How then could a painful trial—one that seems totally void of love and protection—be a proof of Love’s care?”
The opportunity to explore this question came when I found myself faced with deep sadness and
depression.
I spent years following graduation from university searching for my life’s purpose. With a degree in music and training in acting for film, television, and theater, I thought working in the arts would bring me a sense of fulfillment. While every opportunity to perform was a delight, there was also a steady, pervasive sense of emptiness that accompanied each day.
