About two years ago I noticed that my heart was beating abnormally, and I was constantly aware of it. I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me, and in our prayers we affirmed what the Bible says—that man is made in the image and likeness of God. We were recognizing that man is spiritual and governed by God, the only power, who is ever present.
I looked up references to heart in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, to get a better understanding of its spiritual meaning. The practitioner reminded me that we weren’t trying to heal a body part, but seeking to gain a better understanding of my true being. I learned that the true heart is not material, but spiritual, and that we each, in truth, reflect the great heart of Love, God. If the heart is of God, it is gentle, loving, understanding, receptive, and perfect.
Then I remembered that a client whom I did bookkeeping for was sending money overseas to someone I felt was dishonest. Every time I had tried to discourage her from doing this, she had been very resistant. One day she even said that I was hard-hearted. This upset me, because my motive to protect my client had come from compassion.
