Two kayaks and loving our neighbor

From the July 2024 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Early last summer, the subject for the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly one week was “Christian Science.” Throughout the week I had been carefully studying the Lesson, which is composed of passages from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Mrs. Eddy wrote that it is on these Lessons that “the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends” (Manual of The Mother Church, p. 31). This statement has always been important to me, as it is indicative of the tremendous value and authority of the Lessons.

One idea that had been especially significant to me in the Lesson was the need to love one another, as part of living and demonstrating Christian Science. The Lesson included Christ Jesus’ words: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34, 35). And this from Science and Health: “Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way” (p. 454). I prayed deeply each day to open my heart to better understand and put into practice these meaningful citations.

That week, I had family in town visiting me. On Friday evening we took several kayaks down to the beach at Lake Michigan to spend some fun time together. The water was very calm and the air was warm, providing a perfect opportunity to teach one of my young relatives how to kayak.
