Is it possible to be modern and yet be holy? Multitudes are looking for practical proofs of Christianity's effectiveness in our present times. It is frequently asked, Can the Bible, compiled during predominantly pastoral times and with far fewer people involved, have any meaningful application in today's jet society, geared to tremendous population expansion and breathtaking technological advancement? Would the holy men of old have been holy if they had lived in our society? Christian Science answers Yes, holiness does become each and every one of us, as much today as in ancient times.
One of the basic facts revealed by Christian Science is contained in this profound statement by Mrs. Eddy: "The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike.
Christ Jesus was not impressed or depressed by numbers. Whether alone or with the multitudes, he was conscious of the ever-present Christ, which included his perfect selfhood, and the perfect selfhood of all those about him.
During his ministry Christ Jesus "went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the the kingdom of God. " Luke 8:1; Today Christian Scientists, following in their Master's footsteps, utilize their periodicals as one modern correlative to proclaim to the world "glad tidings" of the emancipative power of Christ, Truth.
In her "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy says, "That individual is the best healer who asserts himself the least, and thus becomes a transparency for the divine Mind, who is the only physician; the divine Mind is the scientific healer.
The practice of Christian Science starts with the facts of true being: the truth of God, which is His allness; the truth of man, which is his perfection as God's idea; and the truth about evil, which is its nothingness. Thought based on these facts is not easily swayed by suggestions of the presence of something besides the allness of God, the perfection of man, and the nothingness of evil.
Paul admonished the Ephesians, "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. " And after explaining that they were fighting not "against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places," he said, "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in one of her Communion Addresses, speaks of our God-given ability to love our enemies. She says in "Miscellaneous Writings": "The last act of the tragedy on Calvary rent the veil of matter, and unveiled Love's great legacy to mortals: Love forgiving its enemies.
