Testimonies of Healing
I feel it a duty, and also a privilege, to send in my mite in the way of testimony to some of the benefits received through Christian Science. I cannot tell all the peace, contentment, and change for the better that have come into my home through this blessed truth, but I will refer to two demonstrations which my husband was able to make for me just recently.
It has long been my desire to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me, knowing that the smallest grain of good cannot be dropped without helping some one else. Being an actress, my attention was first drawn forcibly to Christian Science by the fact that when I was experiencing great suffering, all pain would leave me while performing on the stage, and I would go through my part with scarcely any feeling of distress; but as soon as I was through with it the misery would overwhelm me, and I would scarcely be able to get home.
About three years ago my first impression of Christian Science was gained through the reading of a Thanksgiving number of the Monitor. I had not read our daily papers for some months, but after seeing that copy of the Monitor I promised myself to look into Christian Science, for I felt that an organization which published such a paper was certainly worthy of investigation.
I deem it no less a duty than a privilege to testify to the manifold blessings which have been showered upon me during the three years and upward since I came into Christian Science, until I feel that "my cup runneth over. " The first demonstration made for me, of which I wrote about three years ago, actually startled me into an appreciation and acknowledgment of the power of Truth.
Several years before my attention was called to the teachings of Christian Science, I had been actively engaged in a social settlement in a large city. The suffering I had witnessed in the tenements from tubercular disease had always called forth my deepest sympathy, and when this disease manifested itself on me I felt it a great imposition, as I had fitted myself for the work I was doing by a hospital training and was loath to give up my interest in the problems which faced us in these social centers.
I wish to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me, and will say that I had suffered for several years from nervous and stomach troubles, also sleeplessness, so that when divine Truth, as expressed through Christian Science, was brought to my attention, I was sorely in need of aid, and certainly found in it an ever-present help in trouble. The kindly ministrations of a faithful practitioner were successful in overcoming the nervousness and the stomach disorder, as well as the sleeplessness, in a few treatments.
About five years ago I was said by physicians to be in a very precarious condition. Their diagnosis of the case was that there were several large abdominal growths, which would render the birth of my child impossible except through the Caesarean operation, and at the time of this proposed operation the growths were also to be removed.
I KNOW not how to express my thankfulness for the help I have received from Christian Science. Four years ago I knew little or nothing about it, and when my two-year-old boy had an attack of bronchitis, a doctor was sent for.
It is with great pleasure that I give my testimony, hoping it may be of benefit to some one. About four years ago I experienced a great sorrow, which left me in a deplorable condition, with nervous exhaustion and heart trouble.
To one who counts among his treasures a beginner's knowledge of Christian Science, the word gratitude looms large upon his horizon. Quite commonly we had been content to associate the word with some particular event, not entertaining it as a blessed inhabitant of our consciousness; but how differently and deeply the perpetual sense of gratitude is cherished by those who have felt the healing touch of Truth! A few years ago my sense of gratitude was incomplete, hampered by fear, weighed down by discord, moral, physical, and mental.
