Testimonies of Healing
In the spring of 1898, while employed as a carrier in the post-office at Spokane, Wash. , as a result of exposure I was suddenly stricken with severe lung trouble, which later assumed a most alarming form, many times causing the fear that this attack would be my last.
The radical statement in our wonderful text-book, "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on this subject" (Science and Health, p. 120), has proved itself incontrovertible to me.
Four years' careful study of Science and Health has impressed me with the truth of these words of Professor David Starr Jordan: "The truth which another man has won from nature or from life is not our truth until we have lived it. Only that becomes real or helpful to any man which has cost the sweat of his brow, the effort of his brain, or the anguish of his soul.
I suffered from childhood and was counted delicate, physicians differing as to the cause of my illness. I had a severe nervous trouble, heart disease, etc.
It is with a feeling of deep gratitude and thankfulness that I can offer my testimony of how I was restored to health through Christian Science. For over twelve years I had been a sufferer from nervous trouble and minor ills.
I was a great sufferer for two years with kidney and bladder trouble. I was under the care of physicians all the time, but received no relief except as they would administer morphine.
Ten years ago I was a very ill woman with scarcely any hope of recovery. For thirteen years I had been subject to attacks of stomach trouble and had gradually given up eating all kinds of solid food from fear of the suffering which I endured.
In 1896 I was healed through the power of Christian Science, after having spent much money and submitted to experimental treatment by many physicians in eastern and western cities for a period of over fifteen years, during which time I was a sufferer from what was diagnosed as a serious kidney trouble. In these years of suffering I was subject to attacks of such severe pain that the attending physician always prescribed a hypodermic injection of morphine.
From early childhood I was unable to go through a summer season without a severe illness accompanied by great suffering. I had many physicians and all that any of them could do to relieve me was to administer morphine in large quantities.
A little over two years ago my first impressive attention was drawn to Christian Science by a lecture on this subject given by a prominent orthodox minister in his church in Englewood, III. Prior to that time my knowledge of Christian Science was very limited; I had been told of wonderful cures effected by Christian Science, but I gave little credence to what was told me in regard to these healings.
