Testimonies of Healing

When I was a boy I had typhoid fever, and it left me with what doctors call nerve weakness. When I grew to manhood this weakness caused me to have heart and stomach trouble.

Christian Science has done so much for me that I want to express a little of my gratitude through our periodicals. I had been an invalid since childhood, was confined to the bed ten months at one time, and had many shorter sicknesses.

I first heard of Christian Science about four years ago when I was in a very deplorable condition both mentally and physically. At that time I was just trying by every material means, including will-power, to regain my health and strength after a second very severe operation.

I wish to bear testimony to the wonderful regenerative influence of Truth in the purification of sense, or spiritual uplifting. The way has been long, covering a period of ten years, and there have been ups and downs, and times when I seemed to be standing still.

I have been greatly benefited by some of the testimonies of healing given in the Christian Science Sentinel, and believe it is a duty we owe to God and to mankind to testify, when Truth has done as much for us as it has for me. During the winter of 1888 and 1889, while attending a school of languages in New York City, T was overtaken by the grip.

My dear mother spent her lifetime preparing for the proverbial rainy day, which never came to her. Later, however, plenty of them came to me, and I found her lifetime preparation inadequate for my need.

I have often thought I would like to give to the Field my first experience in Christian Science, and also my healing, which, to me, was most wonderful. From early boyhood to the time of my healing, which included many long and weary years, I can scarcely remember a time when I was not taking medicine in some form.

I GREW up in an atmosphere of skepticism. A most unfortunate religious experience had brought my parents to a condition of thought which, when it was not cynical or amused, was hostile to every religious idea based on the Bible.

It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I acknowledge the healing and regenerating power of Truth, to which I owe all that I have and all that I am. Before coming to Christian Science, I was continually under a doctor's care, always taking medicine, yet hardly knowing a day free from pain.

I used to think when I was taking Christian Science treatment that if I were ever healed I would write my testimony for the Journal, because I received so much help from those who had written of their healing. Mine is the old but sweet story that so many have told before.
