Testimonies of Healing
As a young child, I had a warm, radiant feeling that God was wholly good and that He loved me very much. Years of sound instruction, which I received as a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School, deepened this conviction in my heart.
As I begin this testimony, I realize how grateful I am for spiritually-minded parents. Although they were not Christian Scientists while I was growing up, in times of need they always turned to God.
Although my brother and I did not grow up in a particularly religious household, we did attend a Christian Science Sunday School (albeit sporadically) and were encouraged to apply the spiritual truths we learned there in our everyday experience. A few years after high school, however, and in the face of family tragedy, I stopped praying and ended up seeking refuge primarily in superficial relationships, in others' opinions, and eventually in alcohol.
One day I was having a pleasant telephone conversation with a friend when a man knocked on our door. He identified himself as a local police detective, and he asked me to accompany him to the scene of an accident that had occurred on the next street.
Since I began the study of Christian Science twenty-seven years ago, I have found the testimonies of healing in our periodicals to be a valuable asset in forwarding the demonstration of this great truth for both myself and my family— especially in times of urgent need. I would like to share the following experience regarding our youngest daughter, LeeAnn, who is now in her teens.
A few years ago I turned wholeheartedly to the study of Christian Science. After making this commitment to know God better, I started to read the Bible Lesson daily, instead of my previous hit or miss approach.
The wonder of the following healing remains with me to this day. I feel sure that without a basic love of the teachings of Christian Science, the unfailing support of my wife, and the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner at various times, I would not be sharing it now.
I began attending Christian Science services many years ago, while living on our ranch—about fifty miles away from any branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Eventually I found that a group of Christian Scientists were meeting in a small town nearby, so I started attending there.
For twelve years I suffered from chronic menstrual pain so severe that at the beginning of each cycle I became feverish and faint and had to stay in bed. Even worse was the fear that I would have this pain while at school or work, and would be unable to find a place to lie down.
During my freshman year in college I was studying to be a concert pianist. But at the end of the first term, a few days before juries (piano performance finals), I seemed to have all the symptoms of a cold.
