Testimonies of Healing
The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was lent to me by a friend after I had had a year of intense suffering caused by ulcers of the stomach.
After many years of only partway and part-time study of Christian Science, I went through a testing time with the sudden loss of my husband. In the consternation and grief of those hours, I reached out for something which could be relied on and decided to call on a practitioner for prayerful support.
When I first met my future husband and read some of the Christian Science literature in which he was interested, it sounded like sheer nonsense. Even after he had a healing of a ruptured appendix, I was still incredulous; but gradually by continued study we were both healed of smoking and drinking.
Although I attended a Christian Science Sunday School for a few years as a youngster, it was not until an urgent need arose in my late teens that I turned to the wholehearted study of Science. The problem was solved, though it took some time, much prayer, and much humility; and I have been a devoted student of this Science ever since.
During the depression in 1931 I was out of work and had repeated sickness in the family. After two or three months I remarked to a business friend who let me use his office when necessary that I had done all I could to find employment and also a cure for my daughter.
Christian Science was introduced into our family by my mother, who received wonderful help from its teachings. However, although I was quite prepared to admit what it had done for her, I had no desire to look into its teachings for myself; and when I started to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, it was more to please her than from any real interest.
When we turn unreservedly to God in our hour of need, we are always blessed with a satisfying and an enduring solution. This fact has been proved many times in my experience.
The first real lesson I learned in Christian Science was to rely on God for guidance. The understanding of God as Mind enabled me to have an absolute conviction that I would be guided to take the right step when faced with a decision.
My heart is overflowing with gratitude for the power and the ever-present availability of the Christ, Truth, given to us in Christian Science by our revered Leader. Our family has had many proofs of its healing power.
Just two years before I completed my undergraduate work at college, the need for eyeglasses became evident. My work was lagging behind schedule, and much physical discomfort attended each day's activities.
