Testimonies of Healing
Something over two years ago I attended my first Christian Science service. This was in The Mother Church in Boston.
A little more than four years ago a friend induced me to go and talk with a Christian Science practitioner. I had not known good health for more than ten years, and in that time I do not think three months ever passed without a more or less serious illness.
Before I knew of Christian Science and its beautiful teachings I was in a wretched condition indeed, and sometimes wished that God would take me to heaven through the door of death, as I had been taught to believe He would. Still I feared I was not fit for that city of purity and light, and I often wondered how death could possibly make me ready for it: in fact.
When I first heard of Christian Science I was in a hopeless condition, knowing that I could not live many months longer as I was. I had tried many doctors, and had several operations, each of which left me worse off than before.
Many blessings have come to me through Christian Science,— the greatest and most comforting of all being a restored faith in God, in Christ, and in the Bible. It is so good to have something substantial to lean upon, to know that nothing is willed or fated but the good, and that every evil thing can be forestalled and averted if we only have enough of the Christ-spirit, coupled with sufficient understanding to drive out the error and bring into manifestation that harmony which God established everywhere before the world began.
About two years ago I became very much interested in Christian Science, and was healed of a nervous trouble which presented itself in both my hands and arms, and thus greatly interfered with my music. It also deterred me from doing any writing whatsoever.
"A random thought, calling itself dyspepsia" (Science and Health, p. 175) found lodgment with me for over ten years.
I trust the experience I have to relate may be as helpful to others, as many of those given in our periodicals have been to me. About three years ago I fell on a frosty walk and caused an injury to the knee joint, which at the time seemed very slight indeed, although it became quite trouble some within three weeks, so that the help of a physician was necessary.
Like many others I sought Christian Science for relief from physical disabilities. For years I had suffered from nervousness which was attributed to my occupation, that of bookkeeping.
Last April, while getting ready to move, I became very ill. A physician was called and pronounced the trouble double pneumonia, and said that there was very little hope of recovery.
