Testimonies of Healing
I give my testimony with the hope that a personal experience of healing through individual effort and the reading of Science and Health, may be of help to some sufferer who perchance is "toiling along the weary way" of illusion, disease, and fear, with "painful step and slow. " From early girlhood my trend of thought has been along reformatory and educational lines.
As I sit this Sunday afternoon in the quiet of my room and my thoughts wander to the past. I recall that from childhood I have yearned for something better than speculation regarding man and his relationship to the Almighty.
" The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. " Thank God for that final verdict! We Christian Scientists, enlisted for the destruction of sin, sickness, and death, give sincere thanks that the day is nearer than when the apostle made this momentous statement, whereby we learn, that death is not of God, it is not a friend, it is not irrevocable; it is an enemy, and is to be destroyed.
I have known for years that there was a great deal of good in Christian Science, but I never thought that I should be one to test it. I took a severe cold and my physician called it pneumonia.
Some twenty years ago I injured my ankle, and although I went under a doctor's care at once, it kept getting worse until there proved to be a very bad type of ulcer. After trying three doctors in Nevada City, I came to San Francisco and received treatment from a celebrated physician there.
I wish to give my testimony as to the power of Truth in the treatment of broken bones. A year ago, while at work among a lot of machinery, in trying to place a belt on a pulley, my foot slipped off the rung of a ladder on which I was standing, and a set screw of the revolving shaft caught the lower part of my trousers and in a moment my leg was wrapped about the shaft.
At times Christian Scientists are tempted to admit a sense of discouragement if in doing their work they do not immediately see its fruits, and to such I should like to give my testimony. Some seventeen years ago there was a member of my immediate family who had been very ill many months, during which time she had tried everything in the way of climate, physicians, etc.
The following testimony was given in a letter to a practitioner which we are permitted to use. —Ed.
I have received such marvelous benefit from Christian Science treatment after all other means had proved futile, that I wish to give my testimony for the encouragement of other sufferers, worn and weary from their ailments. I am a guard in the railway service of New South Wales, and was for many years a terrible sufferer from asthma, during which time I spent quite a small fortune on doctors and their medicines, seeking relief but finding none worthy of the name.
I feel I must not longer delay in writing to the Journal the beautiful demonstration we had of God's love and protecting care on last Christmas eve. We had decorated and lighted our tree as usual, and the room was full of guests, when suddenly my little boy (four years old) slipped and fell from the piano stool.
