Testimonies of Healing

In the fall of 1919, I was taken...

From the January 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the fall of 1919, I was taken seriously ill with influenza. After having medical treatment I became worse, and my mother, who was very much alarmed, wrote to a relative who was a Christian Scientist and asked for Science treatment for me. A practitioner called one Sunday evening and immediately began treatment. Her first words to me were, "Remember that God is omnipotent." From that moment I was confident that the healing would be certain.

A copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was lent to me by the practitioner, and I began reading. These words on page 1 illumined my consciousness: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." I tried to reason that if all things were possible to God, it was possible for me to be healed. The third day I arose from my bed, dressed, and went for a walk, gaining strength with every step I took. This healing appeared remarkable to friends, but since studying Christian Science I know that it was divinely natural.

About five years ago I had an experience which proved to me the power of divine Love to supply our needs. The business of the concern in which I was employed became dull, and I found it necessary to seek a position elsewhere. For a long time I searched, but without results, and discouragement for a while seemed to overwhelm me. Turning to the Bible I read these words from a psalm: "The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing." These words were a source of much comfort to me, as was also this passage on page 494 of Science and Health: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." After nearly three months had passed I began to realize that in order to receive one must give, and at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting I expressed gratitude for the healing mentioned above. Two days afterwards I received a letter in which was an offer of a position. With a grateful heart I called to see about it, and found it to be much better in every way than the previous one. For these proofs of the power of divine Love I am deeply grateful.—
